William R. Fischer, Sr.

William R. Fischer, of Wallingford, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in West Haven. He was the beloved husband of 62 years of Ann Francolino Fischer.

Born in Bound Brook, NJ, August 31, 1926, a son of the late Harold and Florence Garry Fischer, he was a 1944 graduate of Lyman Hall High School. Bill served his country, enlisting in the U.S. Army serving in Italy and Vienna, Austria. He served an apprenticeship as a Barber for Ralph Roudiís Barber Shop and later opened his own Barber Shop in 1962. He later became a sales rep for Teletronics in 1970 and became a partner in an alarm company in 1971.He also worked as a sales manger for G and G Distributors, and later obtained his real estate license and worked for Walter E. Kowalski Real Estate and the Dan Combs Agency.

He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Shaw-Sinon Post and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 591. He had served the Town of Wallingford since 1955 as a member of the Democratic Town Committee and was Chairman from 1964 Ė 1981 returning from 1994 - 2008. He also served as the Chairman of the Board of Assessors, a member of the Mayorís Ad Hoc Committee on Aviation, The Mayorís Ad Hoc Committee on Electric Power, Chairman of the Police Station Building Committee in 1986, Chairman of the Town Hall Building Committee in 1988, as well as Chairman of the School Roofing and Underground Tank Removal in the 1990ís. Bill also was a researcher for the State General Assembly Committee looking into aid for non-profit schools from 1969-1970 and had served as Deputy Barber Examiner in 1979. He was appointed to and chaired the Connecticut Examining Board of Barbers, Hairdressers and Cosmeticians in 1979 and was appointed by the late Governor Grasso to the State Insurance Purchasing Board. He was a former member and past president of the Holy Trinity Holy Name Society, and a member and past-president of the Menís League at the Church of the Resurrection. He was awarded the St. Josephís Archdiocesan Medal, a life time member of the Knights of Columbus, a Past Treasurer of the Columbus Club, and a 4th Degree Member of the 1858 Christopher Columbus Assembly and had served as Chairman of the Building and Grounds Committee of the Church of the Resurrection.

Besides his wife Ann, Bill is survived by his children, William R. Fischer Jr., and his wife Alice, David Fischer and his wife Lorraine, Marianne Fischer, Diana Fischer-Reddick and her husband Terris, Harold Fischer and his wife Helaine Fischer; his grandchildren, Sarah Fischer, Amber Fischer, Zachary Fischer, Eliza Reddick, Ari Fischer, Carmen Reddick,. Jordan Fischer, Terris Reddick and Marianna Reddick; his great-granddaughter, Kayla Neils, his sisters, Martha Lang and Barbara Johnson, and many nieces, nephews and close friends.

His family will receive relatives and friends in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 North Main St., Ext., Monday, April 14, 2014, from 4 to 8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. directly at the Church of the Resurrection. Internment, with military honors, will be in the In Memoriam Cemetery.
