Meriden: Stanley F. “Dziadzi” Opozda, 87, of Oak St., Meriden, died, Monday, March 1, 2010, at the MidState Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of the late Henrietta Kocot Opozda.
Stanley was born in New Britain, September 3, 1922, the son of the late Frank and Dorothy Wielgoz Opozda. He was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, serving in WW II. He was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service and Purple Heart for injuries received during the Normandy Invasion. He had been employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft until his retirement, was a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Church, a former member the P.L.A.V. of Meriden and the Disabled American Veterans. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed watching UConn Women’s Basketball, Maloney High School Boy’s Volleyball and Softball. He cherished spending time with his grandchildren and playing golf.
He is survived by his three daughters, Dorothy O. Lyskowski and her husband John of Meriden, Christine Dombrowski and her friend Ron Cibroski of Meriden, and Irene O. Rackliff and her husband Robert of Madison; his four grandchildren, David Lyskowski, Kristen Smith, Eric Zajac, Emily Pardew, and two step-grandchildren Jesse Rackliff and Carrie Rackliff; and his three great granddaughters, Madeline Pardew and Brooke and Allie Zajac. He was predeceased by his four sisters, Jenny Opozda, Helen Siedzik, Julia Smyka and Anne Nasznic.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, March 8, 2010 in The Wallingford Funeral Home, 809 N. Main St. Ext., from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held Tuesday from The Wallingford Funeral Home at 9:30 a.m. when the funeral cortege will proceed to St. Stanislaus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Interment with military honors will be in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Meriden. In lieu of flowers, gifts in his memory may be sent to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105 .
